Probing General Relativity on the Scales of Cosmology

چکیده
This certainly is not precision cosmology, but the consistency of estimates that depend on many different aspects of the theory and a broad variety of astronomical methods show that it almost certainly is accurate cosmology, that is, that we have not been misled by systematic errors. That means general relativity theory passes significant empirical tests on the scale of the observable universe. The measurements supporting this remarkable advance are reviewed in Sec. 3. After brief comments on the more modest network of evidence for the detection of Λ, in Sec. 4, I conclude with a qualitative assessment of our understanding of the physics of spacetime and gravity on the scales of cosmology, and the case for developing a more systematic framework for judging the empirical evidence.

Dark Energy: Beyond General Relativity?
The late-time accelerated expansion of the universe is a major challenge for cosmology. It may well be that a solution to this problem will require a theory of gravitation beyond General Relativity. It is emphasized that precision cosmology will strongly constrain the possibilities by using observational data probing the background as well as the inhomogeneities.
متن کاملGoing Nonlinear with Dark Energy Cosmologies
The formation of large scale structure in the universe is a central element of astrophysics. Apart from the structure itself, it also offers a incisive tool for probing cosmology and particle physics. Since structure formation is a competition between expansion and gravity, the growth as a function of redshift is intimately tied to the expansion of the universe. Studies of matter density fluctu...

We elaborate on some recent results on a solution of the Hilbert-space problem in minisuperspace quantum cosmology and discuss the consequences of making the (geometry of the) Hilbert space of ordinary nonrelativistic quantum systems time-dependent. The latter reveals a remarkable similarity between Quantum Mechanics and General Relativity.
متن کاملNonlocal teleparallel cosmology
Even though it is not possible to differentiate general relativity from teleparallel gravity using classical experiments, it could be possible to discriminate between them by quantum gravitational effects. These effects have motivated the introduction of nonlocal deformations of general relativity, and similar effects are also expected to occur in teleparallel gravity. Here, we study nonlocal d...
متن کاملFundamental constants and tests of general relativity - Theoretical and cosmological considerations
The tests of the constancy of the fundamental constants are tests of the local position invariance and thus of the equivalence principle. We summarize the various constraints that have been obtained and then describe the connection between varying constants and extensions of general relativity. To finish, we discuss the link with cosmology, and more particularly with the acceleration of the Uni...
